Seneca Hosts IVLP "Clean Energy" Tour

6/26/2024
On June 25, 2024, Seneca Landfill (Seneca), owned and operated by the Vogel Family, hosted a tour for seven energy experts from Ukraine to discuss and review operating renewable energy projects using Municipal Solid Waste at the Seneca Landfill. The projects include the High BTU Methane Recovery Plant, the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) 335 KW Engine, and the on-site Lego V Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Fast Fill Fueling Station. These projects process landfill gas to generate renewable energy in the form of CNG to fuel the Company’s fleet of garbage trucks and generate electricity.

The tour was part of a joint project in partnership with GlobalPittsburgh and the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) project for Ukraine, entitled, "Clean Energy." Seneca partnered with GlobalPittsburgh on many tours in the past going back to 2017 with energy delegations from countries such as Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the European Union, Faroe Islands, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

According to Nadya Kessler, Director of GlobalPittsburgh, “When designing the itinerary for this group of Ukrainian energy experts participating in the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program, I was considering regional resources using renewable energy. I immediately thought of the Methane Recovery plant at Seneca Landfill, Inc., because past groups had been so impressed by it when they toured the facilities and Seneca’s leadership has always been welcoming of our groups.”
